PhotoCraft: The Open-Source Photoshop Alternative in the ArtCraft Suite

Updated 2026-10-11

PhotoCraft is the raster image editor in the ArtCraft suite - the app positioned against Adobe Photoshop. Written in Rust, free and open source, it reproduces the familiar Photoshop workspace while wiring in the suite's AI capabilities for background removal, region edits and generation.

What it replaces

PhotoCraft mirrors the Photoshop workflow: layers, masks, adjustment layers, blend modes, filters and a toolbar that will feel immediately familiar. The goal is a near-zero-relearning transition - same keyboard shortcuts where possible, same mental model.

What it does today

  • Layer-based raster editing with masks and blend modes.
  • AI-assisted operations: background removal, inpainting-style region fixes.
  • Canvas compositing that feeds the ArtCraft generation pipeline.
  • Native performance from the Rust core - fast on large canvases.
  • Scriptable via the suite's CLI/JSON/MCP control channel.

Where it is rough

  • The filter and adjustment catalog is a subset of Photoshop's decades-deep list.
  • Plugin ecosystem does not exist yet - no third-party extensions.
  • CMYK and print-production workflows are early.
  • PSD compatibility is partial - complex files may lose fidelity.

Who it suits now

Everyday photo editing, compositing and AI-assisted retouching are workable today. Print-prep professionals and PSD-pipeline shops should evaluate carefully before switching.
