WordCraft: The Open-Source Word Alternative in the ArtCraft Suite
Updated 2026-10-11
WordCraft is the word processor in the ArtCraft suite - part of the second wave of apps that took aim at Microsoft Office after the Adobe-clone launch. It is a native, open-source take on the Word document model.
What it replaces
The Word workflow: formatted documents with styles, headings, tables, images, comments and DOCX interchange.
What it does today
- Rich text documents with paragraph and character styles.
- Tables, images, headers/footers and page layout.
- DOCX import/export for Office compatibility.
- Local files - no forced cloud.
Where it is rough
- Newest app family in the suite - the roughest edges are here.
- Track changes and review workflows are early.
- Complex DOCX files may round-trip imperfectly.
- No mail merge or macro ecosystem.
Who it suits now
Everyday writing, notes and simple documents. Anyone living in tracked-changes collaboration should wait.
